Are Sticks Dangerous For Dogs?

Some dogs just absolutely love sticks. They love to chew on them, to chase them – and if you’re good, they might even fetch them for you. However, many veterinarians are cautioning dog owners against allowing their dogs to chew on sticks because of the potential for serious injury.

Sticks can be especially dangerous if they puncture the dog’s mouth or throat because they are often covered in molds, fungi, and bacteria from the natural environment, while also having entered the dog’s body through the mouth, which also contains bacteria that can enter the bloodstream when the dog is injured.

While the act of chewing on the sticks itself is not particularly dangerous, a dog can be put at significant risk if they accidentally swallow part of the stick – even small pieces can cause injuries, while larger pieces can cause impaction or serious punctures. Dogs have also been injured catching sticks. In fact, there have been several news stories lately about dogs that have seriously injured themselves while chasing, catching, or chewing on sticks. One vet quoted in the Telegraph says that he and his colleagues treat dozens of dogs every year that have been injured when chasing sticks.
